Silver Hatchetfish
Remarks: Silver hatchetfish, also known as spotfin hatchetfish, come from many parts of the Amazon, Orinoco, and Parana river basins in both clear water as well as tannin-stained creeks. They have become the species most think of when they think of hatchetfish as they are the most common. This genus gets their name from their distinctive body shape - possessing a very large, thin curving breastplate that makes the shape of a hatchet.
With large, strong pectoral fins, hatchetfish are capable of launching themselves out of the water when frightened. As they are very skittish, it is recommended that you keep them with a tight-fitting lid. Floating plants are an added measure of protection while also functioning as a calming mechanism. Hatchetfish typically hover high in the water column, with their flat backs parallel to the surface, adding movement to an otherwise unutilized space.
