Remarks: Otopharynx sp. Spots come from an area near Sani in Malawi. They live in sandy environments but occasionally move into rocky habitats to spawn. They are typically a peaceful cichlid by African cichlid parameters. Females are silver with the three black spots on the sides typical for Otopharynx and several black spots at the base of the dorsal fin. Males have yellow ventral sides that turn cyan, green, and blue as you look up towards the dorsal fin. The dorsal and anal fins are red with blue spots. They are truly a "rainbow cichlid" of Lake Malawi.
