Hippo Point Salmon

Remarks: Hippo point salmon (Ptyochromis sp.) are native to Lake Victoria. Like most Haps, they are maternal mouthbrooders and fare well in all-male set-ups or harem set-ups, with 3-4 females for every male. They can be bred in 30 gallon tanks or larger, as females rarely exceed 3.5" in length and a lone male will typically max out around 5". Males are bright red from the forehead to the beginning of the anal fin, where they turn lime green until the caudal fin. Females remain gray with two horizontal stripes.

Hippo Point Salmon feed on snails in the wild but will readily accept prepared foods in the aquarium.
