Umbrella Hairgrass (Eleocharis vivipara)
Remarks:Ā Umbrella hairgrass (Eleocharis vivipara), also known as tall or giant hairgrass, is a unique and lush plant native to the southeastern United States. In the wild, it can be found growing within and along the edges of shallow ponds, ditches, streams, floodplains, and marshes. It is often used by fish fry, small crustaceans, and other small animals as shelter from predators.
Ā In the aquarium, umbrella hairgrass is perfect to fill in background space. It grows in tall strands giving it a wispy, grass-like look that will bend over to form a canopy once it reaches the surface of the water. Typically, it will grow to about 12-16" tall in the aquarium, but it can grow as tall as 20" or even taller in some cases! Umbrella hairgrass is a generally hardy plant, but it will greatly benefit from CO2 injection as well as high light. Providing such along with plenty of nutrients will encourage denser, greener growth. While umbrella hairgrass usually spreads by splitting at the top of each stem, it can also spread by runners. CO2 and high light will encourage the growth of runners giving even more reason to provide both.
Ā If you notice any yellowing near the tops of your umbrella hairgrass, it likely is lacking nutrients. Dosing aquarium fertilizers will help remedy this issue easily and also may encourage the growth of tiny flowers at the top of the plant. If cared for properly, umbrella hairgrass can be a fantastic addition to your aquascape especially if kept in taller tanks or those with a high-flow river style.
