Three-Spot Torpedo Hap
Remarks: The three spot torpedo hap is a large, impressive, and predatory species of Haplochromine cichlid from Lake Malawi. They are known to inhabit rocky habitats with sandy bottoms where they hunt for smaller fish. Their stream-lined shape that allows them to swim at impressive speeds and the three identifying black spots spaced between their tail and the middle of their body are what gave them the common name of the three spot torpedo hap. Juveniles, females, and lesser dominant males present a beautiful, golden yellow coloration that pairs nicely with their back spots. The mature, dominant males, however, are where these fish really shine as they get electric blue face with this coloration extending into the body in some specimens. This gorgeous coloration makes them a great addition to large hap communities providing a burst of color.
With how large and active the three spot torpedo hap is, most topping out at nine inches but there are reports of some growing larger, they require a large amount of swimming space to thrive. Adult fish will need to be kept in an aquarium that is at least six feet long to provide enough swimming space and avoid stress. It should also be noted their mouths can open extraordinarily wide so while they are particularly peaceful for a hap, care should be taken when choosing tankmates to ensure they are not small enough to be swallowed. Male three spot torpedo haps can become heavily territorial making it where plenty of space and breaks in line of sight need to be provided if planning on keeping more than one together. If properly cared for, these fascinating haps can be a great choice for those who love the more unique Malawi cichlids.
