Prionobrama paraguayensis
Remarks: Many are familiar with the ever-popular glass bloodfin tetra (Prionobrama filigera), but very few know of their rarer relative and the only other known member of the Prionobrama genus, Prionobrama paraguayensis. P. paraguayensis is very similar to P. filigera with the same iconic see-through body and overall shape making it difficult to differentiate the two, especially when the latter is not mature or settled into its environment. The main visual difference between the two species is that P. paraguayensis lacks the iconic red color present in the fins of P. filigera. P. paraguayensis also tend to be slightly larger than P. filigera. While P. paraguayensis lacks any red coloration, they are still an absolutely stunning species that can add an active and elegant touch to the aquarium.
While P. paraguayensis’s close relative can be found across South America, this species has a less extensive range. They are only known from the Paraguay River and the lower Paraná River basins in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay. This more restrictive range gives reason to believe P. paraguayensis is not quite as hardy and thus water parameters should be paid more attention to when compared to P. filigera. Luckily, achieving the necessary requirements is not too difficult. Simply provide P. paraguayensis with an environment that is soft, slightly acidic, warm, well-furnished with plenty of hiding spots, and free of aggressive tankmates or those large enough to swallow this small tetra. Make sure to feed a varied and high quality diet, keep them in groups of at least 6-8, utilize plenty of filtration, and keep a consistent water change schedule and you will be set for success with this unique schooling species.
