Pearlweed (Micranthemum glomeratus)

Product image 1

Pearlweed (Micranthemum glomeratus)

Remarks:  Pearlweed (Micranthemum glomeratus) is an undemanding, fast growing, and vibrant green aquarium plant native to Florida. It can be planted anywhere within the aquarium as it will grow in typical stem plant fashion if kept in mid to lower light conditions and can be trimmed to a desired height. If kept under high light conditions with a rich substrate and frequent trimming, it can be grown as a carpeting plant as well. With its ease of care and versatility, pearlweed is a fantastic plant for beginner and experienced keepers alike.

Pearlweed has an interesting history regarding its classification. For almost the entire time the plant has been in the hobby, it has been mislabeled as Micranthemum micranthemoides (or Hemianthus micranthemoides). Micranthemum micranthemoides was a plant native to the northeast from Virginia to New York, but has been extinct for over 50 years. The actual plant in the hobby we call pearlweed also used to be named Hemianthus glomeratus before it was reclassified as Micranthemum glomeratus. Another addition to the confusion also comes from the fact some use the common name of baby tears to refer to this plant which is the common name also used for its close relative, Micranthemum umbrosum. The easiest way to tell these two plants apart is to look at the leaves. M. glomeratus, what we call pearlweed, has longer, pointier leaves that have a sort of teardrop shape. In contrast, M. umbrosum has leaves that are shorter and rounder in shape more akin to an oval.
