Spotted Sailfin Pleco
Remarks: The spotted sailfin pleco, also known by its L number of L001, is one of the more common species in the hobby that has been available to aquarists for a very long time. They are a hardy species native to the Rio Tocantins with an attractive pattern of gold spots across a dark brown body and fins. This combined with their voracious appetite for algae has made them a popular choice especially among beginner fishkeepers, though most are not aware of the amount of space and care they require. Unfortunately, this sometimes results in some getting released into the wild. This should never be done and any that outgrow a tank should be rehomed instead.
Spotted sailfin plecos grow to around 12" in length, some reporting even larger specimens, and are very active so they require at least a 150 gallon tank to have space to swim. They also are aggressive toward conspecifics so they do not do well when kept with other large plecos. Heavy filtration and frequent water changes are also necessary as they produce a lot of waste, making an algae problem even worse without it. For these reasons, this species is best suited for large tanks or warm ponds. Spotted sailfin plecos have a good amount of armor and do a very good job when it comes to protecting themselves so they can be a great choice for tanks or ponds containing large, aggressive South or Central American cichlids.
