Anubias gigantea
Ā One of if not the largest species of anubias in the hobby is the coveted Anubias gigantea. This plant is a behemoth amongst its kind growing up to a whopping 12 inches tall. Not only is Anubias gigantea unique for its size, but also its leaf structure. Smaller, younger leaves often start out looking rather typical, slender and narrow similar to the closely related Anubias afzelii, mature leaves take on a unique triangular shape. If allowed to grow above the surface of the water, the leaves will often split into three. With its massive size and fascinating structure, it is easy to see why Anubias giganteaĀ is coveted amongst plant enthusiasts.Ā
Ā Anubias spp. should be tied to a rock, driftwood, or other decor, not planted into the substrate. If the rhizome, the thick main stem, is buried, it will likely rot away from being smothered. It will eventually grab and propagate itself to whatever it's tied to or wedged into using its strong roots.
